Mernda, Victoria

Mernda is an outer suburb north of Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Whittlesea.
It was originally known as "Morang" until 1893, when it was renamed "South Yan Yean". It was in 1913 that the locality was renamed into "Mernda", which was derived from an Australian Aboriginal word meaning earth. In 1913, Mernda contained a school, a Methodist church, a bakery/store, a railway station and a mechanics' instituteAs well as the Bridge Inn Hotel .
Today, Mernda has a post office, Uniting and Catholic churches, and railway tracks which once led to Whittlesea, now closed. Ivanhoe Grammar School also has a campus in Mernda. Mernda's football team in the Diamond Valley Football League, the Demons, have been a very successful club, winning 18 premierships over 100 years.
In 2004, residents formed the Mernda and District Residents Association (MADRA) to lobby for the town to be connected to the natural gas pipeline about to be laid in the area. The group was successful and residents now enjoy this essential service.
The area is slowly being suburbanized with several new estates being constructed. |
